While this book’s narrative generally begins in 1949, the more recent and
significant developments since the ending of the Cold War in 1989 are given
greater attention. Viewed through the prism of China’s contemporary history, its
foreign policy objectives and the means to achieve them have evolved as China
has risen in power both economically and in military terms. This work, grounded in the contemporary historical and empirical contexts, examines the changes
and continuities in China’s foreign policy, and assesses the political/diplomatic,
economic, soft power and military instruments that China has increasingly
employed to facilitate its stated foreign policy objective of becoming a global
power of the first rank.
